play toy!

 

I've been to exhibition "play! toy!" held by Zero-One from 3.September to 10.
The first thing I gaze into is their cute illustration poster.
I expect there are full of babies with girlish lace and teddy bears in exhibition hall.


Play toy is not the toy in our mind, but theirs.
Their toy is the shape of another self or the tool of play instead of babies and teddy bears.
Not toy-like to someone?the background of dim exhibition hall with a lime-plastered wall makes that I was under the illusion that I was in another world.

A toy becomes a thing to have, sometimes interested, but soon dumped and forgotten.
It is a stubborn cling old and worn can be found in a flea market.

A little character looking like myself is dancing alone, drinking coffee and choosing wear in shopping bag.
Crying baby holding toy, Boy cutting the sky with yellow bicycle,
and the Seiren in odyssey who tempts men with beautiful song and kill them are alike as the toy they say.
In their features that they tell their story shyly in front of their artworks, there only remains toy which became adult already and players miss that.

9월 3일부터 9월 10일까지 제로원에서 진행된 play! toy!

그들의 귀여운 일러스트 포스터가 눈에 띈다.
어쩌면 전시장에는 소녀풍의 레이스 달린 바비인형과 테디베어가 가득할지도.

play toy는 우리가 생각했던 toy가 아닌, 그들이 생각하는 toy였다. 바비인형과 테디베어 대신 그들의 머릿속에서 끄집어낸 또다른 자아의 모습 혹은 play의 도구. 누군가에게는 전혀 toy 스럽지 않은.. 회벽의 어두운 지하 전시장의 배경이 파스텔 톤의 포스터와는 전혀 다른 세상속에 온 듯하다.

장난감은 그들에게 소유하고 싶은것, 때론 흥미로움으로 관심받다가 버려지고 잊혀지는 존재가 된다. 낡고 닳아 벼룩시장에서나 찾을 듯한 고집스런 집착일수도 있다.

자신의 모습을 꼭 닮아 혼자 춤추고 커피를 마시고 쇼핑백속에 가득 든 옷을 고르는 조그만한 캐릭터. 장난감을 꼭 쥔채 울고 있는 아이, 노란 자전거를 타며 하늘을 가르는 소년. 아름다운 노래로 남자를 유혹해 죽이는 아름답지만은 않은 오디세이의 세이렌 까지 그들이 말하는 toy는 그들의 모습을 닮아 있었다. 작품 앞에서 수줍게 자신의 이야기를 내놓는 그들의 모습속에 이미 어른이 되어버린 toy와 그것을 그리워 하는 player 만이 남아 있다.

무심해져 있던 서랍 깊숙한 곳에서 보물상자를 끄집어 낸 기분이랄까..
