After Interior design career at VOID PLANNING since 2002 to 2006, Jung had run own design studio called ‘UNIQUE DESIGN MIND’. In 2006 Jung published the image snap book titled from Chung-Ha Publishing. Jung has directed various exhibition and visual art projects including Seoul Design Festival.

1. When is your favorite time of the day?
I like each end of the extremes; first the most intensive working hours, and second the silent night spending with enjoyable people. I love intellectual collisions, when professionals synergize. During conversations, they make me find the errors I couldn’t find alone on my own, and that I call ‘pruning’. Those moments provide energy, and also fun. That’s why we do the same kind of meetings at our office.

1. 하루 중 가장 좋아하는 시간은 언제인가요?
극과 극이에요. 두가지가 있는데.
첫번재는 정말 치열하게 일을 할 때.
두번째는 즐거운 사람들과 밤에 모든게 고요할 때 함께 있는 게 좋아요.
그 이유는 저는 지적 충돌을 굉장히 좋아해요. 프로들끼리 서로 씨너지가 일어나는게 좋아요.
서로가 그런 이야기를 하다보면, 내가 혼자서 독단적으로 갔을 때 오류도 짚어주고 하나의 가지치기가 되거든요. 그럴때 에너지가 나는 게 있어요. 그런데 흥미를 느끼고 우리 사무실에서 회의도 그렇게 진행해요.

2. What is the name of the book that you read recently? And the most memorable part?
Though not recent one, the memorable book is the written by Kuma Kengo(くまけんご). In the book, the Japanese architect has explained about what he believes the natural architecture to be. We usually think of ‘nature’ as something to feel ‘eco’ with expensive trees and else, but he says ‘nature’ as ‘space’. That is, the naturalness to fit the space and the time. For example, the space in Jeolla-do should contain the architecture that fits the environment and using materials from the nature around. There lies his concept.
As for the recent book, I started to read which contains a lot of interesting stories on bakery business ethics.

2. 가장 최근에 본 책과 기억에 남는 부분은?
최근에 본 책 말고 기억에 남는 책은 쿠마 켄고의 자연스러운 건축이라는 책이 있어요.
쿠마 켄고는 일본의 건축가고요. 그 사람이 말하는 자연스러운 건축에 대해서 쭉 풀어놓은 책인데, 보통 우리가 자연하면 에코가 느껴져야 될 것 같고 정말 비싼 나무가 와야 될 것 같고. 그런 상상을 많이 하는데 그 사람이 말하는 자연이라는 공간이 있거든요.
그게 뭐냐하면 그장소에 그 시대에 맞는 자연스러움. 예를 들면 전라도라는 장소에서 자연에서 바로 얻을 수 있는 자재들로 환경에 어울리는 건축이 자연스러운 건축이다 라는 거다에 대해서 개념적으로 푼게 있어요.
요즘 읽기 시작한 책은 맛있는 빵집이라는 책인데 빵집을 하는 기업에 대한 윤리를 얘기하는 책인데 아주 흥미로운 이야기들이 많아요.

3. What is your hobby that you enjoy recently?
When people talk about hobbies, the answers are always listening to music, watching movies, reading books, aren’t they? I think they are the basic things that everybody enjoys. I think hobbies refer to those things you often enjoy doing recently. These days I made my definition for my hobbies as ‘being with enjoyable people’ whatever I do; it could be drinking, travelling, party or anything else. That is the most important factor. With enjoyable people, the enjoyable energy fills me. It makes me joyful with full energy, and vitalizes my life. Thus being with them is so important to me, not what I do, be it watching movies or exhibition.

3. 최근 즐기는 취미는 무엇인가요?
사실 취미라고 이야기 하는게 세상에 모든 사람들이 음악을 듣고 다 영화를 보고 책을 읽잖아요. 그건 기본적으로 즐기는 것 같고. 취미라는게 요즘 즐거워서 자주하는걸 이야기 하는 것 같아요. 요새는 딱 정의 내린게 술을 먹던, 여행을 가던, 파티를 하던 정말 즐거운 사람들과 함께 있는 것. 그게 가장 중요하다고 생각을 하거든요.

즐거운 사람들하고 있으면 제가 즐거운 에너지를 받아요. 나도 즐거워 지고 에너지가 업이 되고 생활에 활력이 오더라고요. 그래서 그 사람들과 함께 하는게 중요해요. 꼭 전시를 보고 영화를 보는게 중요한 게 아니고 그 사람들과 함께 하는 게 중요한거에요.

4. What kind of music do you like?
I love oldies. My cell phone ringtone is ‘Millions of Roses’ by Shim Soo-Bong, and I like Cho Duk-Bae, Kim Gwang-Seok, Byun Jin-Seop too. Music is the life, not visual stimulus. I prefer plain and simple music, not heavy while telling the truth. My favorite ones are those on life, not the straightforward ones such as 2PM’s ‘Perfect 10’.

4. 어떤 음악을 주로 즐겨 들으시나요?
옛날 노래 좋아해요. 제 벨소리는 심수봉의 백만송이 장미 구요. 조덕배씨, 김광석씨, 변진섭씨 좋아해요. 비쥬얼적인 자극이 아니라 음악도 하나의 인생이잖아요. 진실에 대해서 이야기를 하고 무겁지 않으면서 담백한 음악 좋아해요. 2PM의 10점 만점의 10점 같은 직설적인 노래보다는 삶에 대한 노래 좋아해요.

5. Do you drink much?
That depends. Usually I can drink one and a half bottle of Soju, but I drink more with enjoyable people. I even keep drinking while drunk. The heavies experience was drinking 4 bottles when I was young. I cannot drink that much now.
Recent heavy drink happened in an Izakaya at Itaewon, when 4 of us drank 4 bottles of Sake, one for each.

5. 술 잘 드시나요?
그때 그때 달라요. 소주 한병 반 정도 마시고요. 즐거운 사람들하고 있으면 계속 마셔요.
취해도 마셔요. 제일 많이 마셔본 적은 어렸을 때4병이요. 지금은 그렇게 못마셔요.
최근에 가장 많이 마셔본 게 이태원 이자까야에서 정종을 4명이서 한병씩 총 4병 마셨어요.

6. Which comes first on your wish-list these days??
The material one is a jet. I wish I have a private jet, to go fast wherever it be.
The other one I wish is, the ability to move people’s mind. My goal during late 20’s used to be ‘get seasoned’, and now as time goes I think I should at least get to know what ‘get seasoned’ is!

6. 지금 제일 갖고 싶은 아이템은?
물질적인 건 제트기. 개인 비행기 갖고 싶고요. 어디든 빨리 가려고요.
그리고 사람을 마음을 움직일 수 있는 능력을 갖고 싶어요. 20 대 후반에 내공을 쌓자 라는 목표가 있었는데요. 시간 지나서 생각해 보니까 내공이 뭔지라도 알자~!!

7. What do you usually do after work?
Sometimes I go straight back home, and sometimes I stay in office with the president, talking on this and that drinking beer. My look says I shall be a party lover, smoking a lot, doesn’t it? But that’s not true~;)

7. 퇴근 후에는 주로 무엇을 하시나요?
퇴근후에는 바로 집에 가는 경우도 있고요. 사무실에서 대표님과 맥주 한잔 하면서 이런저런 이야기 나눌 때도 있어요.
비쥬얼 적으로 파티 장소에 있을 것 같죠? 담배도 많이 필 것 같고.
그렇지 않아요.^^

8. Do you enjoy cultural life?
I like enjoying a lot of things. I love to see concerts. When foreign rock bands visit Korea to have a concert, I bring my wine. That’s prohibited though. There I enjoy the music drinking a glass of wine with someone next to me.

8. 문화생활 즐기시나요?
좋아하는거 많죠. 공연 보는거 좋아하고요. 공연이 좋은 이유는 락밴드 내한공연을 볼 때 와인을 가지고 가요. 원래 그러면 안되는데. 옆자리분과 함께 와인 한잔 권하면서 음악을 즐겨요.

9. Where is your memorable destination for traveling?
I remember 2 memorable destinations.
The first one is New York. It is the place I travelled while I was not tied up with job, regardless of anything. I could fully enjoy travelling with my close friend, free from everything. The pictures I took at the travel still help me express my emotion.
The second place is Namwon and Byunsan peninsula. A little farther from Byunsan peninsula places a temple called Naeso-sa. There I have travelled with our office colleagues, and it was so fun. One of the reasons is the pension we rent, not so fancy, but with the sea right in front. It was autumn and nobody was there. All of us went down to the seashore, played music with i-phone and speaker, drinking with sashimi, enjoying the sunset. That was really our own private party.

Did you speak English well while visiting the States?
No, I am not good at English, and lack of confidence.
There are times that I should contact foreigners during business trip or while working here, and but for serious business matters I don’t have much problem communicating with them. And they also say so. So it doesn’t really matter for travel.

9.기억에 남는 여행지는 어디인가요?
기억에 남는 여행지는 두군데가 있어요.
첫번째는 뉴욕이에요. 제가 직장이 없는 상태에서 아무것도 구애 받지 않고 간 여행지가 뉴욕이에요.
정말 아무것도 없이 자유로운 상태에서 좋아하는 친구하고 여행을 갔었어요.

그때 찍었던 사진들이 지금의 나의 감성을 표현하는데 도움이 되요.
두번째는 남원하고 변산반도가 좋았어요.변산반도에서 조금 더 가면 내소사라는 절이 있는데,
사무실 사람들하고 같이 갔었는데 너무 좋았어요.

왜 좋았냐하면, 그때가 가을이였는데 그렇게 좋지 않은 펜션을 하나 빌렸는데
그 앞에 바다가 있었어요. 거기에 아무도 없는거에요.
우리 사무실 식구들이 다 내려가서. 회를 가지고 오고 아이폰과 스피커도 가지고 가서 음악을 틀고 일몰을 보면서 술을 마셨거든요. 그때는 우리만의 프라이빗 파티인거죠.

미국에 가셨을 때 영어는 할 줄 아는 상태에서 가셨나요?
아니요 저는 영어를 잘 못해요. 자신 없고요.
해외여행이나 출장이나 여기서 일을 하다 보니까 외국 친구들과 접촉할 일들이 있는데,
비즈니스가 아닌 이상 그 사람과 커뮤니케이션 할 때는 언어에 대해서는 장벽이
없더라고요. 그 외국 친구도 그렇게 이야기를 하고요.
그래서 여행할 때 큰 문제는 없어요.

10. Which destination do you wish to go, and why?
I’d like to travel more and more places. These days I dream of travelling Spain, Greece and Istanbul. I found a hot-springs in Turkey from the and I wish I could visit there.

10.꼭 가고 싶은 여행지와 그 이유는?
더 가고 싶죠.
요즘은 스페인이나 그리스, 이스탄불. 터키는 월페이퍼에 나왔던 온천이 있는데 거기 가보고 싶어요.

11. How do you relieve your stress?
I am a person of high-stress. I have thought much over my stress, and I found that I was quite enjoying the stress. As my work goes well, my stress is gone together. Let’s say, if I were in a desert island and still I am a person who relieves the stress only in hot-springs, I cannot help it and that becomes another stress. So I should enjoy the circumstance as it is.

11. 스트레스는 어떻게 푸시나요?
스트레스 되게 많이 받아요. 스트레스 받는 것에 대해서 곰곰히 생각을 해봤는데.
저는 스트레스를 즐기는 편 이더라고요. 일이 풀리게 되면 스트레스도 알아서 풀려요.
만약에 내가 무인도에 있다면 스트레스를 온천에서 풀어야 하는데 그렇게 하지 못하면
스트레스를 받게 되잖아요. 그럼 그 상황을 즐겨야죠.

12. How did you grow up to become a designer?
When I was a little kid, I did dance and did not have will to go to college. All I wanted to do was to have fun. At the 3rd grade in high school, I talked to my parents that I will not go to college. Again, I only wanted to enjoy. At the family talk, my parents suggested for me to go to design college since I enjoyed writing and drawing. Then I started to study arts, and fortunately passed the exam.
At that time I had a dream on fashion, and so applied for fashion design major, only to fail and entered the interior design department. I was so eager to study fashion design that I talked to the professor that I would quit. Then the professor told me, “Design communicates, so try it here. Then you will do good in fashion, too”. That’s the moment I started studying.
One professor recommended me for the company called “Void Plan”. I remember that I was one hour late for the interview even without my resume. But fortunately I was accepted to the company. There I could learn so much and found the space design interesting. After that I had dreamed of multi-designer, and became a free-lance. Then I became drinking companion with Mr. Baek the president, and started to work together. We shared the office for one and a half year, and after that he suggested to constitute a company together, which now became the ‘Urbantainer’.
Since I found I am not good at, I stopped dreaming of fashion design and chose to do what I am good at.

12. 디자이너가 되기까지의 성장과정을 간략하게 얘기해주세요.
어렸을 때 는 무용을 했었고. 대학교를 가고 싶은 마음이 없었어요.
정말 노는 것 만 하고 싶었어요. 고3이였을 때는 대학교 진학을 하지 않겠다고 부모님께 말씀 드린 적이 있어요. 정말 노는 것만 하고 싶었어요. 가족 회의때 부모님께서 글쓰고 그림 그리는 것 좋아하니 디자인쪽으로 대학을 가라고 하셨어요. 대학을 가기 위해서 미술을 시작했고 운이 좋게 대학에 합격했어요.

그때만해도 패션을 하고 싶다는 로망이 있었는데.
패션 디자인학과를 지원을 했었는데 떨어지고 실내건축학과에 합격을 했죠.
패션디자인이 너무 하고 싶어서 교수님한테 학교를 그만두겠다고 찾아갔어요.
그때 교수님께서 하시는 말씀이디자인은 소통되니 여기서 잘해봐. 그럼 패션도 잘할 수 있다고 말씀 하셨어요.
그때부터 공부를 했던 것 같아요.

학교 강의하러 오셨던 교수님께서 저를 “보이드플랜”이라는 회사에 추천을 해주셨어요.
그때 한시간 늦고 이력서도 안가져갔던 기억이 있어요. 그런데 운이 좋게 제가 합격을 했었죠. 그 회사에서 저는 너무 많은걸 배웠고 공간 디자인에 대한 재미를 느꼈어요. 그 이후로 멀티 디자이너가 되고 싶다는 생각에 프리랜서를 했었죠. 그때 백대표님과 술친구를 하면서 일을 같이 하기 시작했죠.
1년 반동안 사무실을 쉐어를 했고 그 뒤에 백대표님이 회사를 구성 하는게 있는데 같이 가보자고 해서 지금의 얼반테이너가 만들어졌어요.
패션을 안 한 이유는 패션을 잘하지 못한다는 것을 알았고 제가 잘하는 것을 했어요.

13. What kind of company is it, the Urbantainer?
Looking at our logo, you will notice the phrase ‘the enjoyable container for the city’. The reason why we built corporation is, hmm… it’s something that I have dreamed from long ago. I and the president Baek are the founders only, and I hope Urbantainer shall keep going even without us.
It took 6 months only for the naming. We took enough time to share our vision, and thought a lot together. We hoped to make the right business, and wish a lot of star designers to be with us.
We do have dream to scout Steve Jobs to Urbantainer. Our dream is so big. We do not limit our business to architecture and interior design. We want to design the culture, that’s the direction we are running for. I see we could make it.

13. 어반테이너는 어떤 회사인가요?
저희가 로고를 보면 아시겠지만, 도시를 담는 유쾌한 그릇이라는 설명이 있어요.
저희가 왜 주식회사를 했냐하면 음…옛날부터 꿈꿔왔던건데, 저와 백대표님은 파운더일 뿐이거든요. 저희가 없어도 얼반테이너는 계속 이어지길 바래요.
이름을 짓는 데만 6개월이 걸렸어요. 서로의 비전을 공유하는 시간이 길었고 고민을 했어요. 올바른 기업이 되고 싶고요. 많은 스타디자이너와 저희가 함께 했으면 좋겠고요.
그리고 저희가 스티브 잡스를 얼반테이너에 스카우트 하고 싶은 욕심도 있어요.
저희가 꿈이 되게 커요. 다분히 건축이나 인테리어만 하고 싶지는 않아요. 문화를 디자인하고 싶어요. 그 뱡향으로 가려고 열심히 노력하고 있고요. 그렇게 될 수 있을 것 같아요.

14. As a designer you will have much interest in fashion, which style do you like?
I used to prefer vivid colors and also wear those colors.
Now my wardrobes are black and white mostly. The reason is, I have to be in various places which include official, formal meetings as well as parties. The color to suit all those occasions is black, I think. If I take out one of my belongings now and you find it pink with Kitty on, isn’t it wired? :) I believe balance is the most important thing.

What do you wear at home?
It’s as live as possible. I wear comfortable ones at home. Still they are black mostly. Black is the color that contains many colors in it, I think.

14. 디자이너라 패션에 관심이 많으실 것 같은데요? 어떤 스타일 좋아하세요?
예전에는 튀는 색상을 좋아해서 원색 옷을 많이 입었어요.
지금은 무채색 옷이 대부분이에요. 그 이유는 저는 많은 장소를 가야해요. 공식적인 미팅도 가고 회의도 해야하고 파티도 가야해서. 그 장소에서 가장 어울릴 수 있는 칼라가 블랙이 아닌가 하는 생각이 들었어요. 지금 제가 만약 다른 소품을 꺼냈는데 핑크에 키티가 그려져 있으면 이상하잖아요? ^^ 조화가 제일 중요한 것 같아요.

집에서는 어떻게 입고 계세요?
완전 라이브하죠. 편안하게 입고있어요.
그런데 집에서 입는 옷도 대부분 블랙이에요.
블랙은 많은 칼라를 담고 있다고 생각을 해요.

15. You took part as art director in Music Video filming. Any episode happened?
It is full of episodes from the beginning to the end. First of all, I should applaud the people in that field. The do love their job. The recent issue on the film let me experience the hardships in the film area. Another experience is, that the space we see through film is very different. There is big difference between the actual space and the space in film. The film should show the fantasy perfectly. The space in film should look beautiful, broad and high. On the other hand, the actual space is the place I could sit in, and contains something. I found the difference very interesting.

15.뮤직비디오 촬영에 아트디렉터로 참여 하시던데, 에피소드가 있다면?
처음부터 끝까지 에피소드에요. 우선 그 분야에 있는 분들에게 박수를 표해요.
정말 그직업을 사랑하는 분들이에요. 얼마 전에 이슈가 되었었던 영화쪽에 힘든 점을 직접적으로 느꼈었고요. 또 다른 경험은 영상으로 보는 공간이 되게 다르거든요. 실제 공간과 영상의 공간이 달라요. 영상은 판타지를 딱 보여줘야해요. 무조건 아름다워야하고 넓어보이고 높아 보여야해요. 실제 사용하는 공간은 내가 앉아야 하고 뭔가를 들어야 하잖아요. 그 부분이 가장 잼있었어요.

16. What inspires your design?
I think the most important thing is not to leave the design apart from myself.

16.디자인 영감은 어디서 받으시나요?
디자인에 대한 끈을 놓지 않는 것이 가장 중요한 것 같아요.

17. Do you often interact with other designers?
I love it. I often interact with our crews at Urbantainer and also with graphic designers, editors, architects and fashion designers, as I am interested in various fields. Interaction with designers is so important.

17.평소 다른 디자이너와의 교류는 하시나요?
너무 좋아해요. 우선은 저희 얼반테이너의 크루들이 있어요.
그래픽하는 친구,에디터하는 친구,건축 하는 친구. 특성상 다분야에 관심이 많아서
패션 하는 친구들도 많아요. 디자이너와의 교류 너무 중요한 것 같아요.

18. Who is your favorite artist, someone you admire, or pay attention?
I like the photographer Kwon Boo-moon, and Yoon Young-Geun so much. These days I am paying attention to the group called ‘Nando’. The door looks like a door mostly, but they create a door that you can’t easily notice it’s a door on the wall. Also there’s a group called ‘Duss’, who create a space with everyday items. For example, they create a dome with umbrellas, a space with lake. They spend a lot of time for those works.
Nathan Ho is the artist group working in Shanghai, and I found they design the space that harmonizes well with the existing architectures.

18.좋아하는 작가 또는 존경하는 작가, 혹은 주목하고 있는 아티스트가 있다면?
좋아하는 작가는 권부문 이라는 사진작가 좋아하고 윤영근 작가 되게 좋아해요.
요즘 관심있게 지켜보는 그룹은 낸도라는 그룹이 있어요.
문은 문처럼 생겼잖아요? 그 친구들은 다 벽인데 어디가 문인지 모르는 문을 만들어요..
또 더쓰라는 친구들은 실제 생활하는 것들을 가지고 공간을 만들어요.
예를 들어 우산을 모아서 돔을 만들고 호수를 가지고 공간을 만들죠. 그걸 만들기 위해서 많은 시간을 투자를 해요.
네이댄호라는 친구들은 상하이에서 활동하는 걸로 알고 있는데 기존 건축물을 잘 살리고 훼손하지 않은 상태에서

공간디자인을 잘 하시더라고요.

19. What do you think is required factor to succeed as a designer? And mind?
Any advice for the future designers?
Well, I still don’t know since I did not succeed as a designer yet. As for the future designers, I would like to say is, “Experience and absorb, no matter what”. There are things you cannot experience often at the age. You should experience, face it, crash, and suffer enough, and based on that you will be able to design what you really want.
The young often talk much about the conditions. I don’t that really matters. First you should think of what you really want to do even in your 60’s and 70’s, apply for the company that fits, and get over it. That’s how you could keep going well, I think.
These days the young designers often work alone in a studio, but the early failures are big loss. They often decide in prior without experiences. Experience as much as possible during your youth.

19. 디자이너로 성공하려면 갖추어야 할 사항은? 후배들에게 해주고 싶은 조언이 있다면요?
우선은 제가 성공을 안해서 잘 모르겠고요.
지금 시작하려는 친구와 하고 싶어하는 친구들에게 하고 싶은 이야기는.
“무조건 경험하고 흡수해라”.라는 말을 하고 싶어요. 그 나이의 경험하지 못하는 것들이 있잖아요. 부딪히고 무너지고 힘들어 봐야만 정말 자신이 하고 싶은 디자인을 하고 싶을 때 그것이 베이스가 되어서 충분히 우러 나온다고 생각을 해요.
요새 친구들 보면 조건에 대해서 이야기를 되게 많이 하거든요. 사실 그게 중요하지 않다고 생각을 해요. 60~70이 되어서도 하고 싶은 것을 먼저 생각하고 맞는 회사를 지원해서 경험하고 이겨내야만 나중에도 잘 할 수 있다고 생각하거든요.
요즘 젊은 친구들이 혼자 스튜디오를 많이 하잖아요.
너무 일찍 무너지는게 아까워요. 경험을 하지 않고 미리 판단을 하더라고요.
젊음의 시기에 경험을 많이 했으면 좋겠어요.
