1. When is your favorite time of the day?
End of the day, after work, wondering what to do for fun before sleep. For me, my work is another kind of fun. I can spend the time drawing, or watching movies, reading books and more.

1. 하루 중 가장 좋아하는 시간은 언제 입니까?
퇴근해서 하루 일과를 마치고 돌아와서 자기 전까지 뭐하고 놀까?
작업도 노는거니까. 그림을 그릴건지, 영화를 볼건지, 책을 볼건지 선택할 수 있는게 여러가지가 있죠.

2. What is the name of the book that you read recently and the most memorable part?
The Japanese novel I have read last summer called , a detective story published quite long ago. I am very interested in tattoos, and I read the book with a lot of fun. Each drawing is said to contain its own meaning, for example one for a fortune, another brings ill luck, and so on.
Do you have tattoos on you now? Hahaha
Will you show me? Hahaha~ I keep to have tattoos now.

2. 가장 최근에 본 책과 기억에 남는 부분은?
여름에 일본 소설인데요 문신 살인사건이라는 책을 봤어요. 되게 오래된 추리 소설이에요. 제가 문신에 관심이 많아서 되게 잼있게 봤어요. 그림마다 뜻이 있는데요 .뭘 하면 재물 복이 있고 어떤 것은 원흉이 있고. 이런것들이 있더라고요.
지금 타투 하고 계세요? 푸하하
보여주세요? 하하하~ 지금도 계속 타투를 하고 있어요.

3. What is your hobby that you enjoy recently?
I love my personal jobs. It could be a painting, or computer based one. Now I’m working on song writing with midi programs, playing guitar. It’s just fun. So far, I feel contented with the fact that I have made it by myself, rather than developing skills. I will study more to make it as a part of my works, that’s what I want to do from now on.

3. 최근 즐기는 취미는 무엇인가요?
개인작업 좋아해요. 페인팅일수 있고 컴퓨터 작업일 수도 있고. 기타 치고 미디로 음악 만드는 거 연구하고 있어요. 그냥 잼있어요. 실력보다는 제 스스로 만들어 놓고 흐뭇해 하는 정도? 그걸 이제 연구 많이 해서 작업의 일환으로써 그런 작업 많이 하고 싶어요.

4. What kind of music do you like?
I love all kinds of music. 2NE1 is my favorite. I think the team’s so well-made one, they are great, I feel proud of them.

4. 어떤 음악을 주로 즐겨 들으시나요?
가리지 않고 음악은 다 좋아해요. 2NE1 되게 좋아해요. 잘 만든 팀이라고 생각하고 아주 훌륭하고 자랑스러워요.

5. Which comes first on your wish-list these days?
I want to have Mercedes-Benz. C200! C200 comes first though I need some more effort. If more excessive beyond my reality, it’s Maserati! I am not a big fan of cars, but Maserati is the first car that I got knocked out watching. Riding black Maserati with red seat, it’s my dream.

5. 지금 제일 갖고 싶은 아이템은?
벤츠 C200사고 싶어요. 현실적으로 조금 무리를 해서 C200! 현실을 벗어나면 마세라티! 차는 별로 좋아하지 않지만 차를 보고 깜짝 놀란건 마세라티가 처음이에요.
검정색에 빨간색 시트의 마세라티를 타고 다녔으면 좋겠어요.

6. How many hours do you sleep a day?
I sleep much, I’m a man of sleep. When I go to bed early, it’s around 2~3 o’clock. If late, I can’t tell until when. I cannot go to work on time. These days I try to go as early as possible, though. Lack of sleep makes me lack of working efficiency.

6. 하루에 잠은 몇 시간 주무시나요?
잠이 많아서 많이자요. 일찍자면 2,3시 늦게자면 한도끝도 없어요.
저는 정시 출근을 못해요. 요즘은 일찍 나가려고 노력을 해요.
잠 못 자면 일을 잘 못해요.

7. Do you drink much?
Well, that depends. Sometimes I can drink without limit. I don’t care which kind, but I enjoy so-ju. It’s really something.

7. 술 잘 드시나요?
주량은 그때그때 다른데요. 잘 받으면 한도 끝도 없이 잘 먹어요.
주종 별로 안가리지만 소주를 즐겨 마시는 편이에요. 소주는 정말 훌륭한 술이에요.

8. Where is your memorable destination for traveling?
I love Hong Kong, it’s been my first and most frequent destination. When I was a kid I enjoyed Hong Kong movies, and there at Hong Kong I found the location from the movies!
When I traveled Las Vegas, I drove 2 hours from to Death Valley and stayed one night. I liked the enormous scale there, and the sound of wolf howling at dawn was so impressive, too.

8. 기억에 남는 여행지는 어디인가요?
개인적으로 홍콩 되게 좋아하고요. 저의 첫 여행지가 홍콩이고 홍콩을 제일 많이 가봤어요.
어렸을 때 홍콩영화를 좋아했고 홍콩 갔을 때 영화에서 봤던 배경이 있더라고요.
그리고 라스베가스 갔을 때 라스베가스에서 데스벨리까지 2시간 운전을 해서 갔었어요. 데스벨리에서 1박을 했는데, 스케일이 엄청나고 굉장히 좋았어요. 새벽에 늑대 우는 소리가 인상 깊었죠.

9. Which destination do you wish to go, and why?
India, Mexico and Cuba are on the list.
The destinations goes well with you..
When I was in LA, they used to think that I’m a Mexican.
Even some gangs came and talked to me.
Thank you~!
How did you reply? Thank you~! The Mexicans I met were shaven head with beard, wearing sleeveless tops and black pants. They were so big.

9. 꼭 가고 싶은 여행지와 그 이유는?
가고 싶은 여행지는 인도하고 멕시코,쿠바
여행지가 본인하고 굉장히 잘 어울리세요..
제가 LA갔을 때 멕시칸으로 오해를 되게 많이 받았어요. 갱들이 말걸고 그랬어요.
뭐라고 대답하셨나요? Thank you~!
멕시칸들이 머리밀고 수염기르고 런닝에 검정색 바지 입었었어요. 막 이렇게 뚱뚱해가지고.

10. How do you relieve your stress?
I think I de-stress by drinking. I used to relive stress by working out, but I don’t keep it these days. I have to start it again. I tried Kendo once and it really helped stress relief. Also it’s good for mental training. I started Kendo since I liked the uniform.

10. 스트레스는 어떻게 푸시나요?
술로 많이 푸는 것 같아요. 예전에는 운동으로 많이 풀었었는데 요즘에는 잘 못하고 있어요. 다시 시작하려고요. 검도도 잠깐 했었는데 스트레스 해소에 정말 좋아요.
정신 수양에도 좋고요. 도복이 너무 멋있어서 시작했었어요.

11. What is the reason to use the name Oh Ja Hwa, besides Oh Seung Wook?
I made the name Oh Ja Hwa in 1996, since I did not like my name Oh Seung Wook. As young, I thought it’s too simple without any impact. I wanted to have more distinctive and unique name, and named myself as Oh Ja Hwa. In Chinese character, Ja stands for by oneself, and Hwa stands for drawing. Thus the name means Oh Seung Wook, freedom, and drawing. People used to misunderstand the name as Ozawa, the Japanese name. That’s quite stressful. It’s Oh Ja Wha, not Ozawa. They often remind me the name of Japanese AV actress Ozawa Maria. One of my friend always makes fun of it, and that’s really uncomfortable.

11. 오승욱이라는 이름 말고 오자화라는 이름을 쓰게 된 이유는?
제가 오자화라는 이름을 96년도에 만들었어요. 이유는 제가 오승욱이라는 이름을 안좋아했어요. 어렸을 때 평범한 것 같고 임팩트가 없다고 생각했어요. 독특하고 유니크한 이름이 있었으면 좋겠다라고 생각해서 만든게 오자화에요. 스스로자, 그림화를 써서 오승욱,자유,그림 이라는 뜻이 있어요. 사람들은 오자와로 많이들 알고 있어요. 일본이름 같다는 얘기를 많이 듣는데 굉장히 스트레스에요. 오자와가 아니고 오자화 입니다. AV배우 마리아 오자와 얘기도 많이 들어요. 아는 동생이 그 이름으로 장난을 많이 쳐요. 굉장히 불쾌해요.

12. How did you grow up to become a designer?
My father majored in Western painting, and I grew up watching him drawing since childhood. I liked drawing too, and it seemed to be arranged as my future job. It could not be a fine art, but it stayed in drawing field until I prepare for the college.
When I discussed with seniors about my path, it started to be a graphic area. First I worked on the music or editorial design, and later more focused on drawing. Though not a fine art, I decided to mix drawing into my design.

12. 디자이너가 되기까지의 성장과정을 간략하게 얘기해주세요.
아버지가 서양화 전공을 하셨어요.
어렸을때부터 아버지가 그림그리는 것을 보면서 자랐어요. 저도 그림 그리는 것을 좋아했고 그림 그리는 직업에 대해서는 어렸을 때부터 정해졌던 것처럼 갔어요.
원래는 순수미술까지는 아니였지만, 입시전까지는 그림쪽이 더 컸었어요.
선배님들과 진로에 대해서 얘기를 해보고 시작은 그래픽쪽으로 시작이 된 것 같아요. 처음에는 음악,편집 쪽으로 작업을 하다가 어느 순간부터 그림을 좀 더 하게 되었죠. 순수미술까지는 아니더라도 내 디자인에 그림을 같이 버무려서 해야겠다라는 생각을 했어요.

13. What is your favorite color?
I can’t explain why I like black color. Black gives me thrill since childhood. When I see C200 in black… ah, C200 is not enough to be a nice example:) Let’s say, a black Maserati passing by makes my hair stand.
When I meet the items using black color exquisitely, it thrills me. And I think, ‘that’s mine’. I do wear blacks mostly. I have tried to wear other colors earlier in mid 20’s, only to fail. I came back to black. I can’t help it, but I don’t know why.
Black seems to be the absolute color. The most beautiful, sexy and attractive one.
I used to be fascinated to something named bad. Things they say not to do. Those things contain charms in design, too. Also my design motto lies on that.

13. 좋아하는 칼라는?
블랙을 좋아하는 이유를 잘 모르겠어요. 어렸을 때부터 까만 것을 보면 흥분이 되요. C200 까만색 보면…그러고 보니까 C200은 좀 짜친다. ㅎㅎ
마세라티 까만색 지나가는 것을 보면 머리카락이 서는 것 같은 느낌?
블랙이 절묘하게 잘 들어가 있는 아이템을 보면 피가 끓어요. 저건 내꺼라는 생각`이 딱 들어요. 제가 까만 옷을 주로 입는데요. 20대 중반에 다른색을 입을려고 노력을 했던적이 있는데 실패했어요. 다시 돌아왔어요. 어쩔수 없는 것 같아요. 이유는 모르겠어요.
블랙은 절대적인 칼라인 것 같아요. 가장 아름답고 섹시하고 매력있어요.
어렸을때부터 불량한 뉘앙스에 굉장한 매력을 느껴요. 하면 안될 것 같은 것들……
하지 말라는 것에 디자인 적인 매력도 있어요. 제 디자인 모토에도 그런게 있어요.

14. Any plan for marriage?
I have not thought of marriage before. I want to get married, but later on… My plans say late 30’s.
What if your loving girlfriend keeps you from something you want to do?
Break up. I have experiences that kind of break-ups before. There’s no answer for that.
I have struggled not to break up. I have tried and tried to make it fit, but it’s not a thing to be solved that way.

14. 결혼은?
결혼 생각이 과거에는 없었어요. 결혼은 하고 싶어요.
그런데 천천히…. 제 계획으로는 30대 후반에 하고 싶어요.
사랑하는 여자친구가 하고 싶은 것을 못하게 할 때는?
헤어져야죠. 그래서 헤어진 경우 되게 많아요. 그건 답이 없어요.
헤어지지 않으려고 발버둥을 쳐봤어요. 맞춰보려고 노력을 해봤는데, 그건 맞춘다고 되는게 아니에요.

15. How did it start, the 2010 Converse Gathering Project?
We set the huge shoes in studio, painted, and filmed all the process alive. The exhibition was held in COEX for 2 months, with the video edited for promotion. It’s been great fun.
What about Nike wall painting project?
That’s quite similar. One thing different for Nike wall painting is that I didn’t do the painting on my hands. I provided the design layout to the wall painting company, and they come with crane, beam the design with project on the wall and paint. That’s novel. There are companies specialized on those jobs.

15. 2010 컨버스 게더링 프로젝트는 어떻게 시작되었나요?
스튜디오에서 대형신발 세팅하고 페인팅 하고 라이브로 동영상을 다 찍었어요.
코엑스에서 두달동안 전시를 하고 동영상 편집해서 프로모션 했는데, 되게 잼있었어요.
나이키 벽화 프로젝트는?
그것도 비슷하긴 한데, 좀 다른게 나이키 벽화 같은 경우는 제가 직접 그린건 아니에요. 디자인 도안을 주면 벽화 그리는 회사에서 크레인 가지고 와서 프로젝트를 벽에 쏴서 작업을 해요. 희한하더라고요. 그것만 따로 하는 회사가 있어요.

16. What inspires your design?
A lot comes from everyday life. I think the designers are not limited to the working hours. Their everyday life should be a part of their job, thus I am always ready to absorb something new. If there’s an antenna, whether it’s for TV, movie, or internet, everything from that could become a source of inspiration. Experience is important, so I go out and see, experience, stimulated and get inspired.

16. 디자인 영감은 어디서 받으시나요?
일상에서 받는 게 제일 많은 것 같아요. 디자이너는 업무시간만이 아니라고 생각하거든요. 평소가 업무의 일환이다라고 생각하기 때문에 항상 뭔가 새로운 것을 흡수하려고 하는 준비가 되어있고 안테나가 서있으면 TV든,영화든,인터넷이든 그게 소스가 될 수 있고 영감을 받을 수 있다고 생각해요. 경험이 중요하고 나가서 많이 보고 자극도 많이 받아요.

17. Who is your favorite artist, someone you admire, or pay attention?
I like Lee Woo Il very much. I’ve been watching him since my childhood. I noticed his works during his college years. I do like his consistency. Recently, I am paying attention to Mike Giant, the tattooist and graphic designer in U.S who also runs for a T-shirt brand business. I got enormous stimulation from his works. What he’s doing is exactly the same things I want to do. I love black and white works, and he is doing that. My dream is to get tattoos by him. Later I wish to do some project with him together.

17. 좋아하는 작가 또는 존경하는 작가, 혹은 주목하고 있는 아티스트가 있다면?
이우일씨 되게 좋아해요. 제가 어렸을 때부터 봤어요. 이우일씨가 대학교 다닐 때
작업하던 것을 봤거든요. 꾸준한것 같아서 저는 그분 되게 좋아하고요. 최근에는 미국에 마이크 자이언트라고 타투이스트면서 그래픽 디자인도 하고 REBEL8이라는 티셔츠 브랜드 사업도 하는 분이 있어요. 저는 그분 작업보고 엄청난 자극을 받았어요. 내가 너무 하고 싶은 것을 딱 하고 있는 것 같은 느낌이 들어서요. 저는 흑백 작업 좋아하거든요 그런데 그 분이 그런 작업을 해요. 그분한테 타투를 받는게 제 희망이에요. 나중에는 그분하고 같이 작업하고 싶어요.

18. Have you ever dreamed of some different job?
If not a designer, I could become a musician. Since I am a designer and music lover, I have many musician friends. When I watch them playing, I feel that they are relieving the thirst on music that I cannot do as a designer. So I have desires to do it even as a hobby. On the other hand, if I did not become a designer I could have tried the design as a hobby.
Will you keep on design for the rest of your life?
Painting, design, editing, music ? everything I like is a part of my design. In that way, I will be designer for the rest of my life. Not specified on graphic designer, though. I want to be a ‘Creater’. I want to do various projects, just like the families around. Once I got stuck on the painting I play guitar, and then I stuck on the guitar I do the painting. This is amazing, I will recommend it everywhere. It relieves the stress as well.

18. 다른 직업을 갖고 싶다고 생각해 본적은 있나요?
제가 디자인을 안 했으면 음악 했을 것 같아요. 제가 디자인 하면서 음악을 좋아하다 보니까 음악하는 지인이 많아요. 그런 사람들의 연습하는 것도 보고 공연도 보면서 느끼는점은 내 직업으로 해소하지 못하는 것을 그 사람들은 해소를 하는 것 같아요. 그래서 취미로라도 하고 싶어하는 욕구가 있어요. 아마 디자인이나 그림을 안 했으면 반대로 디자인을 취미로 했을 수도 있겠죠.
디자인을 평생 하고 싶으세요?
페인팅,디자인,편집,음악 제가 좋아하는 것은 제 디자인의 일환이라고 생각해요.
그렇게 생각하면 평생 디자이너가 맞는 것 같고요. 그래픽 디자이너만은 아닌 것 같아요. 크리에이터가 되고 싶어요. 주변에 같이 있는 가족 같은 느낌으로 여러가지 작업을 하고 싶어요. 그림 그리다가 막히면 기타를 치고 기타 치다 막히면 그림을 그리는 작업이 굉장히 좋은 것 같아요. 이런 거 추천해 주고 싶어요.
스트레스 해소에도 도움도 되고요.

19. What is the project you have the most affection? And why?
One of my projects called ‘PIKUCHA by ojahwa’. PIKUCHA could be my first child.
At first, I did not start the project as business. I made a T-shirt to wear for myself, and then came to think, shall I sell these? Well, I love this child so much, but the child is beyond my control sometimes. Now I will compromise to keep my child from wrong ways.
You provide a lot to the celebrities, don’t you?
Celebrity sponsorships are made by contracting agencies. The sponsorship agencies. If you pay a certain amount to those agencies, they provide your items to the celebrities.

19. 가장 애착이 가는 프로젝트는? 그리고 그 이유는?
피쿠차바이 오자화(PIKUCHA by ojahwa) 라는 저의 영역이 있어요. 피쿠차는 저의 큰 자식이죠.
장사를 하려고 했던 것은 아니고 티셔츠를 만들어서 제가 입어보려고 했다가 팔아볼까? 라고 생각했던 것이 시작이 되었어요. 너무 사랑하지만 자식이 제 마음대로 되지 않아요. 자식이 나쁜 길로 빠지려고 하고 타협하려고 해요.
연예인 협찬을 많이 하시던데요?
연예인 협찬은 회사하고 계약하면 되요. 협찬 대행이죠.
한 달에 얼마 지불하면 그 아이템을 연예인들한테 뿌려줘요.

20. Your pride as a designer
I used to be very stubborn before. During a project, if anybody even the advertiser says something that I cannot agree, I said “Get away” “Find another” right away. But now I am learning how to keep my stubborn character in wiser way. As time goes, it seems my stubborn character is compromising and pride I should keep wisely. Being stubborn and keeping your ways are different, isn’t it?

20. 디자이너로써의 자존심
어렸을때는 곤조 장난 아니였어요. 작업 할 때 광고주고 나발이고 짜치는 소리하면 “가라!!” “다른데 알아보세요.” 라고 했는데 이제는 그 곤조를 현명하게 지키는 방법을 알아가는 것 같아요. 똥자존심하고 제가 지켜야 하는 자존심하고 시간이 지나면서 현명한 타협을 하게 되는 것 같아요. 곤조와 고집은 차이가 있는 것 같아요.

21. What do you think is required factor to succeed as a designer? And mind?
Any advice for the future designers?
Interest and passion are necessary. Also desire, too. When I see staffs or employees with sense but lack of desire, I feel so sorry. Excessive desire could go wrong, but it’s good for the person actually. The desire to know any more and do any better makes the one improve. Though having great sense and talent, lack of desire makes one slow in progress. Design consistently with open mind, with desire. That’s what I want to tell them.

21. 디자이너로 성공하려면 갖추어야 할 사항은? 그리고 마인드는?
후배들에게 해주고 싶은 조언이 있다면요?
관심과 열정이 있어야 할 것 같아요. 욕심이 있어야 해요. 같이 일하는 스탭이나 직원들을 보면 감각은 있는데 욕심이 없는 경우가 있어요. 그래서 좀 안타까워요. 욕심이 과하면 안 좋지만 본인한테는 좋은거에요. 하나라도 알고 싶고 더 잘하고 싶고 그래야 자기가 발전이 있는 것 같아요. 아무리 감각이 있고 소질이 있어도 욕심이 없으면 발전이 더딘 것 같아요. 욕심을 갖고 항상 꾸준하게 열린 마인드를 가지고 디자인을 했으면 좋겠어요.

22. Anything you hope to Mutual Response?
I hope Mutual Response go well. Though all the trials seem sparkling at first, a lot fade away as time goes by. I hope the same does not happen to Mutual Response. Keep your first mind, and make the new era in design media.

22. 뮤추얼리스폰스에 바라는 점이 있다면?
잘 되었으면 좋겠어요. 모든 시도들이 그렇듯이 처음에는 빛이 나고 시간이 지나면 바래요. 뮤추얼리스폰스가 그러지 않았으면 좋겠어요. 초심을 꾸준하게 유지를 해서 한국에 획을 긋는 디자인쪽에 매체가 되었으면 하는 바램이 있습니다.

23. Lastly, anything you want to say?
Well, I took the liver function test the other day. I did not feel good these days, and people suggested the test. It cost 170,000 KRW for the test!
After two blood tests and an ultrasound, they said I have fatty liver and should not drink. I have another drink schedule tomorrow! I should control my drinking, and work out. I think it’s time for self management.
My last words are, health is the most important, and do not drink and drive!

23. 마지막으로 할말은?
간 검사 받았어요. 컨디션이 안 좋아서 주변사람들이 간 검사 받아보라고 해서 받아봤어요. 간 검사 받는데 17만원 들었어요.^^
피 두 번 뽑고 초음파 검사 받았는데 지방간이라고 해서 술 먹지 말래요.
내일 술 약속 있는데 큰일이에요. 앞으로 술 자제하고 운동도 좀 해야겠어요.
자기 관리가 필요한 시간이 아닌가 싶어요.
건강이 최고라는거~~^^ 음주 운전도 하지 말고요. ^^
