q2design, QianQian

Staring at the screen with blinking eyes, or staring at someone inside the screen, mao Man (maomao_q2design.com). An illustrative style where East meets West. Minimal design with colors that you can not take your eyes off. These are some of the descriptions that can describe q2design but it is not enough. But there is a word that can sum up the works of q2design.

‘Energy’

Q2design has a certain energy that can attract people with unforgettable concepts and stories, wit and strong and fresh colors. We met with Qian Qian to learn more about that energy.

1. Tell us a little bit about your self.
I am living in a small town called Springfield in the mid-west part of USA with my wife and two cats. I'm teaching graphic design here in a university, and doing some freelance work. There isn't much going on in this town, so I rely heavily on the web to communicate with people, and know what's going on in the design community, and the world.

2. What made you decide to become a designer?
I first became interested in websites around 1999, and later found out graphic design is actually what mainly attracted me about those websites. Then I started to learn design by doing it myself. As I see myself doing better and becoming more passionate about it, I made up my mind to pursue it professionally two years later.

3. Do you have a special hobby you want people to know about?
Nothing special, I love music besides design. My all time favorite musicians are Suede, New Order, The Cure, Billy Corgan, Pulp, and Guns N' Roses.

4. It is important for designers to have their own design philosophy, what is q2design's design philosophy.
I think I want my design to be idea-driven besides looking good. I think a lot when I design. Ideas last much longer than styles. I'd like to see how my work evolves in time.

5. What is your favorite design style and what kind of design are you good at?
I don't rely on style, but I do enjoy artwork that is minimal or very detailed in an intelligent way. I don't quite like graffiti or hip-hop looking stuff. I think I am good at creating graphics for screen and print. I have better sense in plat color forms than in photographic imagery.

6. Are you happy with work you have done for clients? What are differences between client work and personal work? I am happy with some of them, and I like to do work for clients who respect design. That's the only way that the final output could be good. Personal work has a lot more freedom, and a lot of times is more like fine art than design. Client work is usually a lot more challenging. 7. What is the most fun project you have done so far?
The short movie that I did for Panasonic's Capture the Motion II. Because it is newly done and there is 100% control.

8. Your work has feeling of unification between Eastern and Western design. What do you think about your own works?
I think I am getting more into modernism, a bit old school. Since I grew up in China, educated in the UK, and now working in the US, my work may have different cultural references. And I'd like to have whatever interests me interpreted into my work, especially personal work.

9. Tell us your opinion about design in china.
Design is definitely the next big thing in China, if economy keeps growing. China deadly needs to be culturally strong in order to be a real strong force in the world. We now still heavily rely on our past culturally. I see the past decade a decline of China's contemporary culture. We have much fewer good literature, films, and music now than in the 90s. But it is promising to see the young generation gets a lot more interested in design, and more and more good work emerging now.

10. What is your opinion about designs from Asia? Have you come in contact with designs from Korea?
Design in Asia is full of energy and originality, especially in Japan. Asians are more delicate and sensitive than Americans in general, which makes our visual communication often indirect, suggested, thus deeper. This is similar to Europe. I had a very good student from Korea. I also met with Ahn Sang-Soo once, who I respect much. I see a lot of great work coming out of Korea these days, especially in web and games. China should learn to be more independent in building up our own identities. Korea set up a good example for us.

11. Tell us about plugzine and what kinds of activities does plugzine do?
Plugzine is a collaboration project between Joyn:Design and myself. The first issue is a collection of some of the most exciting visual artists working today. Due to personal reasons, I no longer participate in future productions.

12. You have participated in various exhibitions. What do you gain from participating in exhibitions?
The most interesting thing probably is to get to know more exciting people, and see what they are doing. It is very inspiring.

Design is ever so changing and QIAN QIAN is always evolving with the changes. QIAN QIAN, as a designer, has his own colour and style. He prefers ‘idea’ over style. He wants his designs to not only look good but be able to create thoughts. It is a way of communication. Between designers and non-designers, between you and me, we all communicate through experiencing Qian Qian’s designs. If we can be inspired and be able to create new thoughts through Qian Qian’s designs then I’m sure he has succeeded in his goal.

We admire and love his energy of design and his freedom for design.

마치 큰 눈을 깜박 깜박거릴 것처럼 모니터를 바라보는, 혹은 모니터의 누군가를 바라보는 mao Man(maomao_q2design.com). 서양적 이면서도 동양적인 모티브를 갖고 있는 일러스트. 눈을 뗄 수 없는 색채감과 단순함의 묘미. q2design을 묘사 하는 말은 이것만으로는 부족할 것이다. 그 중에서도 그의 디자인을 함축할 수 있는 한마디는 바로 이것이다.

'에너지'

그의 디자인에는 사람을 끄는 에너지가 있다. 머릿속을 맴돌며 쉽게 잊혀지지 않는 스토리,무릅을 탁 치게 하는 발랄한 위트. 강하고 힘있는 색채의 신선함. QIAN의 디자인 안에서 느껴지는 '에너지'에는 분명 이유가 있다.

그의 에너지를 배우기 위해 QIAN QIAN을 만나보았다.

1. 간단한 자기 소개를 부탁한다.
나는 미국 중부 Springfield 에서 부인과 2마리의 고양이와 살고 있다. 대학교에서 강의를 하고 있으며 프리랜서로 일하고 있다. 이 지역은 그렇게 썩 일어나는 일이 없어서 사람들과는 웹으로 communication을 많이 하고 있다. 디자인 쪽 이슈나 세상 돌아가는걸 알기 위해 웹에 많이 의존하고 있다.

2. 디자인을 하게 된 계기는 무엇인가?
1999년도에 처음으로 웹에 관심을 가졌다. 그 당시 웹을 좋아하는 이유가 그래픽 디자인 때문 이라는 걸 알았다. 혼자 디자인 공부를 하고 스스로가 점점 발전하고 있는 것을 느끼면서 열정을 갖게 되었다. 2001년부터 디자이너의 길을 가기로 마음 먹었다.

3. 사람들에게 자랑하고 싶은 특별한 취미가 있는가?
특별한 건 없고, 디자인 외에는 음악 듣는 것을 좋아한다. 좋아하는 밴드는 Suede, New Order, The Cure, Billy Corgan, Pulp, and Guns N' Roses 이다.

4. 자신만의 디자인 마인드를 갖고 지속적으로 유지하는 것은 중요한 일이라고 생각한다. q2design 의 디자인 마인드는 무엇인가?
시각적인 요소도 중요하지만, 나는 내 디자인이 아이디어의 중심이 되기를 바란다. 디자인을 할 때는 생각을 많이 하게 된다. 아이디어는 스타일보다 디자인에 많은 영향을 미치며 오랫동안 남기 때문이다. 시간이 지날수록 내 작품이 진화되고 있는 모습이 보인다. 그런 점이 디자인을 하는 즐거움 이라고 생각한다.

5. 자신이 좋아하는 디자인 스타일과 잘하는 디자인 스타일은 어떤 것인가?
특별히 스타일에 의존 하지는 않지만 미니멀 하거나 디테일 한 것을 좋아한다. 그래피티나 힙합 스타일은 별로 좋아하지 않는다. 내 생각에 나는 인쇄나 스크린 쪽의 그래픽이 더 맞는다고 생각한다. 사진 같은 이미지 보다는 Flat 한 색감과 형채를 표현하는 것이 더 매력적이다.

6. 현재 하고 있는 client work에 만족하는가? Personal work와의 차이점이라면 어떤 것이 있는지?
몇몇 프로젝트는 맘에 드는 것도 있다. 디자인을 알고 그 중요성을 인식하고 있는 클라이언트와의 작업은 좋아한다. 그것은 곧 좋은 결과로 이어지기 때문이다. 개인작업을 할 때는 자유로울 수 있는 점이 가장 큰 장점이다. 이것은 디자인이라기 보다는 art 적인 성향이 강하고 클라이언트와의 작업은 좀 더 도전적일 수 있다는 점이 매력이라고 생각한다.

7. 지금까지 한 작업 중 가장 즐거웠던 작업은 어떤 것이 있는가?
최근에 작업한 Panasonic’s Capture the Motion II라는 프로젝트 이다. 나름대로 새로운 작업이었고 프로젝트를 100 % 컨트롤 하였다는 점에서 의미 있었다.

8. q2design 의 포트폴리오는 동서양의 디자인이 통합된 느낌이다. 자신의 포트폴리오에 대해서 어떻게 생각하는지?
현재 하고 있는 작업들은 모더니즘 적인 것이 많다. 약간 흐름이 지나긴 했지만... 나는 중국에서 태어나 영국에서 교육을 받고, 지금은 미국에서 일을 하고 있기 때문에 많은 나라의 문화를 체험했다. 다양한 문화의 영향 또한 많이 받고 있다. 그런 점들을 통해서, 내가 관심 있는 주제를 표현할 때 효과적이고 매력적으로 전달되면 좋을 것 같다.

9. 중국의 디자인에 대한 견해는?
중국의 경제가 성장할수록 디자인이 아주 큰 요인이 될 것 이다. 중국이 강해지기 위해선 문화적으로도 강해야 한다. 중국은 아직 고전주의와 과거의 문화에 많이 의존하고 있다. 현재보다 과거의 중국이 그만큼 강했고 전성기를 보냈기 때문이다. 지금은 90년대에 비해 책이나 영화, 음악 등의 물량이 많이 줄어들었다. 하지만 중국의 많은 젊은 디자이너들이 디자인에 관심을 가지고 좋은 작품들을 선보이고 있다. 앞으로의 중국 디자인을 위해 매우 바람직한 현상이라고 생각한다.

10. 아시아의 디자인에 대한 견해는? 한국의 디자인을 접해 본 적이 있는가?
아시아의 디자인은 -특히 일본의 디자인이-에너지가 넘치고 독창적이다. 미국의 디자인은 간접적이면서도 깊이가 있다. 유럽도 비슷하다. 그러나 아시아의 디자인은 미국이나 유럽에 비해 더 섬세하고 예민하다. 나는 대학에서 잘하는 한국 학생들을 종종 보았다. 개인적으로 존경하는 안상수씨도 만난 적이 있다. 한국의 웹디자인과 게임 디자인은 훌륭하다. 중국도 한국과 같이 자신의 아이덴티티를 만드는 데에 노력해야 할 것이다. 한국이 우리에게 좋은 사례가 되고 있다.

11. plugzine은 무엇이며 어떤 활동들을 하고 있는가?
Plugzine은 나와 Joyn:Design이 같이 하는 프로젝트이다. 첫 번째 이슈는 현재에 뛰어난 비주얼 아티스트들의 작품을 모아서 선 보인 것이었다. 개인적인 이유로 지금은 참여 하지 않고 있다.

12. 다양한 전시 활동을 하고 있다. 전시에 참여함으로써 얻는 것은 무엇이라고 생각하는가?
평소에 관심 갖고 있던 많은 사람들을 만날 수 있다는 점이 전시를 하는 가장 큰 이유이다. 그 사람들이 어떤 일을 하고 어떤 생각을 하고 있는지 커뮤니케이션 할 수 있고 전시를 통해 많은 영감을 얻고 있다. 좋은 경험이라고 생각한다.

디자인은 항상 변화하고 있으며, QIAN QIAN 역시 그 안에서 진화 해 가고 있다. 분명하면서도 관대한, 자신만의 색깔을 가지고 있는 디자이너 QIAN QIAN. 그는 스타일 보다는 아이디어를 키워야 한다고 말한다. 그의 작품은 아름답게 보여지는 것에 만족하지 않으며 디자인을 통해 생각할 수 있는 여지를 만들어 준다. 그것은 또 다른 의미에서의 커뮤니케이션일 것이다. 디자인과 디자이너, 디자이너와 우리들, 그리고 나와 당신이 그의 작품을 보며 커뮤니케이션 하고 있다. 그 융합된 시간 속에서 또 다른 아이디어가 만들어 지고 있다면, 이것이 바로 QIAN QIAN이 만들어 내는 디자인 에너지가 아닐까.
