If there is a pet animal that designers love, it would probably be a cat.

Some says they feel the unique charm of cats in they there sleeping pose, and some people feel the charm by the cat’s paws.
Marimyo. She is a designer who loves cats to the extent that she brings home the lost cats, she has pet cats, and even tries to communicate with them.

Marimyo, a designer who like a cat, delicately captures and draws the dynamic appearances of a cat. We meet the designer Marimyo/mariecat.

1. Please give us a brief introduction about yourself and the web site.
This site is to show people pictures rather than a company homepage. It is mainly for cats and people who love cats, to enjoy viewing pictures. As for myself, I am a student in Seoul National university, studying industrial design with my major being visual design. I’ve been drawing cats for 4 years.

2. Can you give us a general introduction to the Marimyo Project Graphics your currently doing?
Next year’s diary ^^; Firstly there has to be a lot of drawings so apart from drawing pictures, there aren’t any particular complex problems.

3. Is there any particular reason for you to start with the illustration production? Project to fundraise for organic animal protection?
When I went to school, I saw this 1992 award winning calendar design on the corner of the library. It was a calendar with cat pictures made by a Japanese cat food company called GAINS. There were six different types of cat drawn in the calendar and it was done very carefully with monotone. I felt that it was a little bit depressing the fact that Japan was making this sort of beautiful cat calendars and we weren’t.

4. What’s the result so far of the projects?
The first one was very awkward. I think the scale got bigger every year. I think my working habits from university and my work were structured and hesitant before I became a freelancer therefore I couldn’t show significant developments. The concrete results are in my FAQ section of my homepage.

5. What were the merits you felt whilst your working on your project.
The merit was working individually, but apart from that I don’t think there is any. I personality prefers one-man show ^^; I like the fact that I can decide everything my self. If I can't decide anything I can always seek help from other designers around me. One regrettable aspect is that to I wish someone can do the labor and other accounting matters so I can focus more on drawing, but I don’t have too much problems with that.

6. How was the response from around you?
It was a period when calendars with cat drawings were not existent at all in Korea, so I don’t think the response was all that bad. I think the reviews for the diary and the calender for this year (2004) was fairly good in comparison to before. However rather than our product, there were more people who were recommending us to stop our type of work. “Could that support you?, why don’t you just get a full-time work” things like that.

7. What was the message you wanted to show, through this project?
The cat is a very symbolic motive for me. Comfortable household’s happiness, warmth, peacefulness, all domestic household motives. The love of the household, free and self-sufficient life, all thing about the loving of domestic household life I think were the messages. But I think from this year its possible that other message would be conveyed within it.

8. Is there a reason for you to begin drawing a unique cat?
In present our cities aren’t normal. And not only the city itself. The pigeons and the cats are like a fragment in the human’s destruction of nature. The earth is meant for all diverse lives, however it feels as though there is only humans living on it. Especially in the city, it has become weird to see other forms of life living apart from humans. The cats receive a contempt treatments, always being chased, suffer from hunger and disease, but they still make families and often live happily. Same things are the pigeons. If you look closely, there are many pigeons who have their foots and toes cut from tangled wires. They are despised as rats with wings. but what is the guilt of the pigeons? When I was working voluntarily in the animal preservation society during my student years, I always though, that I want to change the perception of people who hates cats into people who love cats, something bring favorable impressions. I think I always though about these thing in my past years.

9. Your assessment of cats as a illustrate model?
It looks like the eyes are crystal. There are thousands pose and the expression ….kekeke. They are very funny creatures

10. What are the differences and the specialty in your work compared to other illustrators?
Lets see… I don’t quite know about particular differences… But to argue, perhaps less character manipulation and more reality factor?

11. While your working on the project I think I would have been times where it was rewarding and times where it was not. Any particular episode that’s in your memory?
I liked it when a drawing goes in the direction of way I want, that is when it was rewarding. Also when we give assistance funds there’s satisfaction. Through assistance account, when we save lives of those injured cats, its very rewarding and satisfactory. Times I don’t like is when others suspect me of smuggling the assistance fund. I never thought it as a my volunteer, by drawing and making money and then sponsoring a cause. It was this intention that I began this work, and its like a habit every year, this year next year and the year after. Its like when someone tells a dishwater that the work is unsatisfactory, and is suspicious of them smuggling rubber cloves, detergents and so on, when they don’t want to get your hands wet at all, Its very insulting.

12. Are there any designers who volunteers through similar projects? I’m curious of what types of interchanges happen with each other.
One that comes to my mind is the director of the group made my homepage. He is from the web agency CUBE, and I met him during my study years volunteering in a society club (www.uk-cube.com). During our Cat Art Project, we always received help from him every time we’ve had issues relating to webs.

13. How does is feel for your artwaork to bo reflected as a volunteer work?
As for me, I want my work to be somehow helpful. Whether it's a animal issue or environmental issue, they are in stage where there is no hope what so ever. It was a lot harder for me to get involved in if I don't work in the field of art. I don't want myself to be in the world without any effort. I think about my work being a payment for me to live in this world ^^; however to think of that as an artwork, I want the people who look at my work to share the loving heart to the nature and the anmials so it connects to their positive attitues. The good picture will move people's heart.

14. What do you think is the secret in the product’s popularity.
To call it a key to popularity is a little awkward but it can be argued that locally creative painting culture was not yet stimulated. I think in illustration market, the biggest was publication sector, and people who loves character stationary products were small. For character stationary products, characters were emphasized, and also the trend that that created a boom in the last few years of modern and clean stationery characters were a lot, so I thought splendors and decorative style can be discriminated in future directions,and depending on what they like it will differ, but inside their mind, they all have a desires to be decorative.

15. How do you decide the project’s theme and items from the production?
I think its similar. Its different with everyone you talk to but, the standard is the people’s habit of not wanting interference, and strong individualism, similar to a cat. I think with personally close people, it very hustle and bustle.

16. Do you have any favorite colors or layout you often use?
I like all different sorts of colors and in last year, usually I used primary colors. I prefered strong colors, like red and blue. However, the layout was pretty simple. Firstly, I placed a cat on the main part of screen, and left the background as it is. I know it sounds bit plain ^^; My style of drawings were more like designs until last year. It was like, just pretend to think that there is a house, with this sort of wall paper, this sort of fabric with some furnitures and on the wall, put this sort of pictures and for the main, I would put a cat. But from this year, I would like to try some different layout.The graphic expressoins, like you would see in the late Choson dynasty cartoon ( reiteration of visual points. see-through distortion etc ) and try to draw some eastern Europe's lonesome scenary.

17. Do you have any know-how or some tips on your detailed-illustrations?
For detailed technique, it is important to be have patience and power of observation. For all that, you need good eye sight, so I always intake some vitamin and get my eye check done regulary and sleep well. I think your eyesight is very important. After that it is the matter of fighting against the time. I don't thnk I have any special know-how.

18. What sort of work you get it done with your computer?
Althought I use computer, I do it with my hands and scan it first. I've used painter for a while but personally I like to use water color and colr pen first. Nowadays, work you get it done by computer is just as natural is when you do it with your hands, but the feeling of little details, still different.

19. What do you do in your sparetime?
I'm quiet busy with taking care of my five cats. I don't know about any sparetime, but I live like a house-wife. When I have some time, I participate in voluntary work but other than that, my like is extremely simple.

20. Does your personal propensity similar with when you are on-line and off-line?
I think they are pretty similar. Although it is different depending on person, but basically I am like the cat, who doesn't like to be disturbed and very individualist. But with my close friends, I'm very loud and noisy.

21. What is your future and other plans?
This is our 5th year in Cat Art Project, and go on another 4 years to make it 9 years. In the 10th year we’ll pick our best and put together a last work of best collection. At the moment, after ten years, I want to study South-East arts but I’ll see what happens. I think while I’m studying I will chickens and bears and put them out as a calendar. Of course anything I gain from these works would have to be given to endangered animal society. My plan is to keep earning money this way and give it completely to a environment protection before I die.

23. Any other sites you like to recommand?
akides.com - There are lots of fun and interesting photos of cats. I go there to borrow, humorous ideas that’s needed in drawing a cat.

24. Are there any designer sites, that you would like to interview?
Naturally I like eastern European artists. I see artists that I like and discover they are east European descent or have that background, its really interesting. Lyrical and romanticism types, Dusan Calrai, Starsis Adrigebichios, Elshuvieta Murapska.I really like there happy colors although they feel lonely and depressed. For fun and humorous types Sims Taebak is very curious for me. The clothing have Russian clothing, and the background is very Russian so it's very interesting.

Marimyo accepts the cats for the way they are. Not only cats but also she tries to make her love of animals to come out in a shape or appearance. Through her friend’s neighborhood she meets cats that are not models for artwork or designs.
Rather than for her personal benefits, she designs for her family and the society.
People who think big can only achieve big things.

유독 디자이너들이 사랑하는 애완동물이 있다면 고양이가 아닐까 싶다.
누구는 고양이의 발을 . 누구는 고양이의 잠자는 모습에서 고양이 만의 매력을 느낀다 한다.

마리묘. 그녀는 길잃은 고양이를 데리고 올 만큼 고양이를 사랑하며 고양이를 기르고 고양이와의 대화를 시도하고 있는 디자이너이다. 고양이의 다양한 모습들을 섬세하게 그려나가는 고양이 같은 디자이너 마리캣 그래픽스의 마리묘를 만나보았다.

1. 사이트와 자신에 대한 간단한 소개를 부탁합니다
사이트는 그림을 보여주기 위한 곳, 회사 홈페이지라기보다 그냥 고양이와 고양이 좋아하는사람들이 그림보며 함께 즐기는 곳 정도? 그리고 저는, 서울대 산업디자인과 97학번. 시각디자인 전공입니다. 고양이 그림그린지는 4년정도 됐습니다.

2. 마리묘 그래픽스가 현재 진행 하고 있는 프로젝트에 대하여 간단한 소개를 부탁합니다
내년 다이어리 작업 ^^;; 일단은 그림이 많아야 하기 때문에 그림그리는 것 외에는 프로젝트라고 할만한 복잡한 계획은 없습니다.

3. 유기동물 보호기금마련 일러스트 제작 프로젝트를 시작하게된 특별한 계기가 있나요?
학교 다닐 때 도서관 구석에서 92년도 우수 캘린더디자인 수상집을 우연히 보았는데 거기에 일본 GAINS라는 사료회사의 고양이 달력이 있었습니다. 모노톤으로 아주 세밀하게 그려진 6종의 고양이들이 그려져 있는 걸 보고, 일본은 벌써 92년도부터 이렇게 아름다운 고양이달력이 있었는데 우리나라엔 없는 게 좀 억울했어요. 어쩌면 나도 이런 걸 만들 수 있겠다 싶어서 동호회에서 만들어보자고 제안을 했고 2001년도 달력이 나오게 되었죠.

4. 프로젝트의 과정은 어떻게 진행되나요?
보통 9월정도까지 그림을 그리고 한달정도 디자인과 제작, 나머지 연말은 판매기간입니다.

5. 지금까지의 프로젝트에 대한 결과는 어떠 하였나요?
첫해는 아주 미미했습니다. 해마다 조금씩 규모가 커졌던 것 같네요. 무엇보다 학생 때나 회사 다닐 때 어정쩡하게 틈틈히 진행을 해서 프리랜서가 되기 전까진 그다지 성과가 없었던 듯 합니다. 구체적인 결과는 제 홈 FAQ 게시판에 나와있어요

6. 프로젝트를 진행하면서 자신이 느낀 장단점은 무엇인가요?
단점은 일인다역을 해야 하는 것이지만 그 외에는 없는 듯 합니다. 제 성격이 원맨쇼를 좋아하는 편이라서 ^^; 혼자서 다 결정을 할 수 있는 점은 좋네요. 잘 판단이 안 설때는 주위의 친구 디자이너들에게 의견을 구하면 되구요. 하나 아쉬운 것은 그림에 좀 더 집중할 수 있도록 짐 나르는 육체노동이나 회계관리는 누가 대신해줬음도 하는데 그것도 크게 불만은 없습니다. 이대로도 좋아요.

7. 주위의 반응은 어떠했나요?
고양이 그림 들어간 달력 자체가 한국에 없었던 시절이라서 나쁘진 않았던 것 같네요. 올해(2004) 달력이나 다이어리는 이제까지와 비교해서는 평이 꽤 좋은 편이었던 것 같고...그치만 제품 자체보다는, 이런 일을 하는 걸 말리는 사람이 많았죠. '저걸로 밥벌이가 되겠어...취직이나 하지..' 뭐 이런....ㅎㅎ

8. 프로젝트를 통해 말하고 싶었던 것은 무엇인가요?
고양이는 제게 상징적인 모티브예요. 안락한 가정의 행복, 따뜻함, 풍요로움같은 가정적 모티브이죠. 가정에 대한 사랑, 여유롭고 자족하는 삶, 가정적 행복같은 것들이 이제까지의 주 메세지였던 것 같네요. 근데 올해부터는 좀 다른 이야기들이 들어갈지도 모릅니다.

9. 유독 고양이를 그리게 된 이유가 있나요?
현대 도시는 비정상입니다. 도시뿐만이 아니죠. 비둘기와 고양이는 인간이 부숴버린 자연의 파편 같습니다. 지구는 다양한 생물들로 가득해야 하는데 오직 인간만이 살고 있는 듯 느껴져요. 도시에서는 특히, 사람 이외의 다른 생물이 살아 움직인다는 것이 오히려 이상한 풍경이 되어버렸죠. 도시의 고양이들은 천대 받고, 늘 쫓겨 다니고 굶고 병들고, 그러면서도 새끼를 낳고 키우고 가끔은 행복해도 하고 그러죠. 비둘기도 마찬가집니다. 자세히 보면 엉킨 실 등이 발가락을 졸라서 잘라져 버린 발을 가진 녀석들이 많아요. 하늘의 쥐라고 천대를 받죠. 그렇지만 비둘기가 무슨 죄랍니까. 학교 시절 동물보호소에 봉사활동 하면서 늘 생각했어요. 고양이를 싫어하는 사람들이 최소한 고양이를 싫어하지 않도록, 혹은 호감을 갖도록 만드는 일을 해야겠다고요. 지난 시절은 늘 그런 생각이었던 것 같네요.

10. 일러스트 모델로서의 고양이를 평가한다면? ^^
눈이 보석박아논 거 같아요. 포즈도 표정도 천태만상...ㅋㅋㅋ 너무 웃기는 놈들이죠.

11. 다른 고양이 일러스트와 마리묘님의 작품의 차이점이나 특징은 무엇인가요?
글쎄요...특별한 차이점은 잘 모르겠는데... 굳이 따지자면 캐릭터화되지 않고 매우 사실적인 것?

12. 프로젝트를 진행하면서 보람된 때도 있고 싫었을때도 있었을것 같습니다. 기억에 남는 에피소드가 있나요?
보람된 때는, 그림에서 제가 원하는 방향으로의 변화가 이루어졌을 때가 좋구요. 매년 후원금 낼때는 보람있죠...후원통장 통해서 다친 고양이들이 살아났을 때 기분 좋아요. 싫을 때는, 후원금을 둘러싸고 음해가 있을 때죠. 저는 이렇게 그림 그려서 번 돈으로 후원금 내는 게 봉사라는 생각은 안 합니다. 원래 그렇게 하려고 시작한 일이었고, 그냥 매년 습관에 가깝거든요. 올해도 내년도 그 다음해도. 자기는 손에 물한방울 안 묻히려고 하면서 계속 설겆이하는 사람한테 설겆이가 시원찮네, 수세미나 세제 빼돌린 거 아니냐 하는 식의 사람들은 좀 어이 없죠.

13. 비슷한 작업으로 봉사하는 디자이너나 그룹이 있나요? 어떤 교류가 이루어지고 있는지 궁금합니다.
제 홈페이지를 만들어준 프리랜서 그룹의 디렉터가 떠오릅니다. CUBE라는 웹 에이전시인데 학생 때 동호회의 봉사일로 만났구요 (www.uk-cube.com) Cat Art Project 진행하면서 웹에 관련한 일이 생길때마다 도움을 받고 있습니다.

14. 자신의 아트웍이 봉사로 연결되는 것에 대한 견해는 어떠한가요?
그냥 뭐라도 조금이라도 보탬이 됐으면 합니다. 동물문제든 환경문제든 절망적인 수준인데, 예능계통 종사자라는 것이, 직접 정책을 입안하는 데 뛰어들기도 어렵고 투쟁이나 운동의 최전선에 서기도 어렵잖아요. 그렇다고 문제의식을 느끼면서도 가만히 있는 것은 더 괴롭더라구요. 제 자신이 세상에 무임승차하지 않기를 바랍니다. 봉사라기보다는 제가 지구에 살고 있는 것에 대한 환경부담금 정도라고나 할까요? ^^;; 그치만 그것이 아트웍이라는 형태를 취하는 것은... 그림을 보는 사람 중 몇명이라도 자연과 동물을 사랑하는 마음에 공감하고 그것이 긍정적인 행동으로 이어지기를 바랄 수 있겠죠. 좋은 그림은 마음을 움직일테니까요.

15. Product의 인기 비결은 무엇이라고 생각하나요?
인기 비결이라고 하긴 좀 뭣하지만...굳이 따지자면 이제까지 국내에는 장식화 분야가 활성화되지는 못했던 것 같습니다. 일러스트레이션 시장은 출판미술쪽이 가장 크고 팬시쪽은 미미한 듯 합니다. 팬시쪽은 주로 캐릭터쪽이 강세거나, 아니면 최근 몇년간 붐이 일었던 아주 모던하고 깔끔한 문구류들이 많아서, 아예 화려하고 장식적인 방향으로 가는 것이 차별화가 될수도 있겠다는 생각이 들었습니다. 취향에 따라서 틀리겠지만 인간은 내면에 장식에의 욕구를 조금씩 갖고 있는 것 같아요.

16. Product 제작에 있어서의 주제나 아이템은 어떻게 결정하나요?
우선은 재미있는 포즈나 표정의 고양이 사진을 보고 고양이를 중심으로 영감을 떠올립니다. 배경은 주로 다양한 패브릭이나 가구, 그릇 등이 등장하는 실내풍경일 경우가 많고요, 인테리어 잡지를 많이 구독하고 있어서 도움을 받습니다. 그치만 올해부터는 좀 다른 주제들이 나오게 될 겁니다.

17. 주로 사용하게 되는 컬러나 레이아웃이 있나요?
컬러는 다양한 색을 다 좋아하고 작년같은 경우는 원색을 주로 썼습니다. 새빨간 색, 새파란 색같이 강렬한 색을 선호했죠. 레이아웃은 단순했어요. 우선 고양이를 화면 주요자리에 넣고 배경은 그야말로 배경으로, 바탕에 벽지깔듯이...좀 1차원적 수준이죠? ^^;; 제가 그림 그리는 방식은 작년까진 디자인에 가까웠어요. 집이 있다고 가정하고, 이러저러한 벽지를 깔고 이런 스타일의 패브릭이나 가구를 넣고, 벽에는 이런 그림을 걸고, 앞쪽은 이런 소품을 걸고, 메인에 고양이를 넣으면 되겠다... 이런 식이었죠. 올해부터는 좀 더 다양한 레이아웃을 해보고 싶어요. 후기 조선시대 민화(주로 책거리 그림)에서 보여지는 그래픽적 표현(중첩된 시점, 왜곡된 투시 등)도 시도해보고 싶고, 동유럽풍의 쓸쓸한 풍경같은 것도 그려보고 싶고요.

18. 디테일 일러스트에 있어서의 자신만의 tip이나 노하우가 있나요?
세밀화는 관찰력과 끈기가 중요한 것 같네요. 일단은 눈이 좋아야 하니까 비타민 꼭 챙겨먹고 안과 검진도 수시로 받고, 눈에 무리가 가면 안되니까 잠도 자고 싶은 만큼 실컷 잡니다. 시력은 정말 중요합니다. 그리고 나서는 그냥 세필들고, 시간과의 싸움입니다. 특별한 노하우는 없는 듯...

19. 컴퓨터를 이용해서는 어떤 작업을 하나요?
컴퓨터로 하더라도 수작업 소스를 스캔해서 컴퓨터상에 구성하는 것에 가깝습니다. 페인터를 잠깐 써봤는데 저는 물감이나 색연필로 종이위에 색상을 쌓아가는 것이 물성이 느껴져서 더 좋은 것 같아요. 요즘은 컴퓨터로 한 표현도 수작업처럼 자연스럽긴 하지만 그래도 미세한 느낌이 다르긴 다른 것 같아요.

20. 개인적인 여가 시간에는 주로 무엇을 하나요?
고양이가 다섯 마리나 돼서 이놈들 시중들기도 바빠요. 여가 같은 건 잘 모르겠고, 그냥 가정주부의 삶이라 생각하면 딱 일 듯 하네요. 시간이 나면 다른 데서 하는 봉사활동에 참가하기도 하고요. 그림 그리는 것 외의 생활은 너무 극도로 단순하네요.

21. 오프라인과 온라인에서의 개인적 성향이 비슷한 편인가요?
비슷한 것 같아요. 대하는 사람따라 틀리긴 하지만 기본 베이스는 고양이랑 비슷한 습성으로, 간섭받기 싫어하고 지극히 개인주의적이고요, 사적으로 친한 사이에서는 아주 시끌시끌하고 왁자지껄한 것 같네요.

22. 자신의 미래나 앞으로의 계획은 어떠한가요?
올해 작업이 5년째 Cat Art Project를 진행하는 거니까 앞으로 4년 더해서 9년 채우고 10년째에는 그간의 작업중 베스트 콜렉션을 골라서 마지막 제품 내놓고 일단 마무리를 지을 겁니다. 지금 생각엔 10년 채운 후에는 동-서남아시아 미술사를 공부하고 싶은데 그때 되봐야 알겠죠. 미술사 공부 하면서 반달곰이나 수달같은 멸종위기동물을 주제로 또 동물달력 만들 것 같아요. 수익금은 물론 멸종동물 복원기금에 기부해야죠. 계속 이런 식으로 일해서 번 돈 몽땅 자연보호기금으로 기부하고 죽는 게 목표예요.

23. 즐겨가는 사이트는 어디인가요?
그다지 디자인이나 일러스트 사이트는 안 가는 편인데....^^;;

25. 자신이 인터뷰어가 되어서 인터뷰 하고 싶은 디자이너나 사이트가 있나요?
체질적으로 동유럽 작가들을 좋아하는 것 같네요. 어떤 작가가 좋은데 알고 보면 다 동유럽 출신이거나 그 혼혈일 때가 많아 신기해요. 서정적이고 낭만적인 계열로는 두산 칼라이, 스타시스 에이드리게비치우스, 엘슈비에타 무라프스카. 그들의 외롭고 쓸쓸하지만 행복한듯한 색감이 넘 좋아요. 재미나고 웃긴 계열로는 심스 태백이 궁금하네요. 러시아 민속풍의 옷이나 배경이 민족적이라 재미있어요.

마리묘는 고양이를 있는 그대로 받아들이고 있다.
고양이 뿐만 아니라 동물을 사랑하는 마음이 자신의 작업으로 형상화 되어 나올수 있도록 노력하고 있다. 디자인이나 아트웍을 위한 모델이 아닌 자신의 친구이자 이웃으로 고양이를 만난다.
